Uttaranchal is renamed as Uttarakhand with effect from January 1, 2007
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has given his assent to the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Bill, 2006, which seeks to extend 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Central higher educational institutions, barring minority establishments and those located in designated tribal areas.
Indias Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C7) from its beachside launch pad at Sriharikota and injected four satellites one after another into precise orbit. What is significant is that one of these will be a recoverable satellite called Space Capsule Recovery Experiment (SRE). This is the first time that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will be attempting to recover a satellite. The four satellites that the PSLV-C7 launched were the SRE, Cartosat-II, LAPAN-Tubsat and Pehuensat-I. ISRO has built both the SRE and the Cartosat-II. The other two are from abroad.
Recognising the supremacy of Parliament to expel a member for misconduct, the Supreme Court upheld the termination of the membership of 11 MPs in December 2005 for their involvement in the cash-for-query scam.

Australian spinner Shane Warne reached his 1000th international wicket in the fifth and final Ashes Test. Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan was the first to claim 1000 international wickets.
The Netherlands beat Argentina 1-0 win the women’s Champions Trophy hockey tournament at Quilmes (Argentina) for the fifth time. In the bronze-medal match, Olympic champion Germany downed Australia 2-0.
