India signed the “Abuja Declaration” with Nigeria, setting the stage for a strategic partnership with the world’s fifth largest producer of oil. Nigeria is India’s biggest trading partner in Africa and contributes 12 per cent of India’s oil imports
The 18th Law Commission has recommended increasing the minimum sentence from seven to 10 years in dowry death cases. It has, however, declined the suggestion to increase the maximum punishment from life imprisonment to death sentence.
The Reserve Bank of India raised the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 50 basis points to 7.5 per cent, which is expected to suck out around Rs. 16,000 crore from the system.

Pratibha Devisingh Patil was declared elected the 12th President of India. On July 25, she will become the first woman to head the Indian Republic.As a candidate of the United Progressive Alliance and the Left parties, Ms. Patil secured 65.82 per cent of the total votes cast, while the NDA-supported Shekhawat polled 33.18 per cent.
The Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cleared a Rs. 10,000-crore joint venture with Israel to strengthen its defences against aerial attacks.
The Cabinet empowered Union Ministers to approve hike in the retirement age of employees from 58 to 60 in public sector enterprises, subject to certain condition.

The `Red Fort Declaration issued by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil was the product of the third summit in as many years between the two countries.

Based on the MRP consumption data, Orissa is the poorest State with 39.9 per cent of people living below the poverty line. It is followed by Jharkhand (34.8 per cent), Bihar (32.5 per cent) and Madhya Pradesh (32.4 per cent).
